Teletalk Managing Director Mujibur Rahman told bdnews24.com that technical preparations needed for launching 3G services are at their final stages.
The state-run mobile-phone operator Teletalk will launch 3G services in July, Post and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said on Wednesday.

The minister made the announcement while visiting International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Deputy Secretary-General Houlin Zhao met him.

Teletalk Managing Director Mujibur Rahman told bdnews24.com that technical preparations needed for launching 3G services are at their final stages.

Asked why they are taking four more months even though Teletalk had announced the services from March, Rahman said it took time to set up machineries as it is a new technology.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has allowed Teletalk to trial-run 3G services for six months.

The recently approved 3G licence draft said the spectrum would be auctioned in September this year. Teletalk will have to take the 3G spectrum spending the same amount of money like others even if the state-owned company does not take part in the auction, it says.

The 3G mobile telecommunications are standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunication services fulfilling the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union.

Once introduced in Bangladesh, it will make mobile telephony much more efficient, with high-speed data transfer facilitating users to watch mobile TV, make video calls, use GPS navigation and access many other services.
